i’ma speak on this once and only once, due to the fact that it’s okay to agree to disagree…but this is how i see it…(you heard it here first)…if you get my point, cool…if not, cool.
biting is doing the same thing as somebody else…as far as you doing what you saw / heard them do.
sampling isn’t biting because YOU CAN’T DO WHAT THEY DO.
in other words…most people that sample CANNOT REPLAY WHAT THEY ARE SAMPLING W/ THE SAME INSTRUMENTS THAT WHO THEY SAMPLED PLAYED.
you can BITE what you can obtain…like, one can copy my idea if they can RECREATE what i did using the SAME items.
if you can’t RECREATE what i did using the same tools, THEN YOU CAN’T BITE ME.
that’s why it’s so easy to “swagger jack”…COPY snare rolls / drum patterns, or even fashion styles…because it’s easy to obtain the same tools / items and do the same thing yourself.
anyways, my main point is that you can’t BITE what you can’t PHYSICALLY RECREATE.
SAMPLING isn’t so much BITING as it is “recirculating”, or even “remixing” (for lack of a better term)
a true “BITER” is a “cover” band…somebody that can PHYSICALLY play somebody else’s songs…
a really good example of somebody that realized what biting is / was and DEFEATED biting is LITTLE RICHARD.
he developed a style that nobody else could PHYSICALLY emulate.
same thing w/ a lot of famous painters and artists…given the same tools, you still can’t physically recreate what they did AND MATCH OR SURPASS the level of QUALITY.
